Open House Weekend Day One: Still, We Rise on Saturday, February 3, 2018, is a day celebrating the majesty of our experiences and the ways we continue to excel. Through imagery, spirituality, culture, activism, and creativity, we created spaces that nurtured our souls and provided environments to explore and develop our talents. We’ll examine and honor each of these areas when the Apollo Theater, the Harlem Arts Alliance, and other New York City institutions and organizations present a free afternoon of performances, previews, and presentations by Apollo Amateur Night’s Capone, Apollo Comedy Club’s Mugga, Annette A. Aguilar and String Beans, LaRocque Bey Dance Theatre, Soul Science Lab, Tyrone Birkett | Emancipation, Urban Word NYC, and more. Hosted by Michael Hill from WNET and WBGO and Billy Mitchell, whose memories and knowledge are so great, he’s known as “Mr. Apollo!" Doors open at 1PM. Event from 2PM-6PM. This event is free and open to the public but tickets are required for entry. Tres Mujeres Magníficas
del Jazz Latino
Annette Aguilar | Jenn Jade Ledesna | Laura Andrea Leguía
Three magnificent New York Latina jazz artists come together for a very special evening celebrating Women’s History Month. Nicaraguan-American percussionist Annette Aguilar and her acclaimed band, String Beans, demonstrate their virtuosity and versatility with a wide range of material including music from Brazil. Returning to the US after a long residency in Paris, the Dominican / Puerto Rican-American vocalist Jenn Jade Ledesna, accompanied by her trio, brings her high-energy and effervescent style to standards and originals. The Peru-born saxophonist / composer Laura Andrea Leguía and her ensemble fuse Afro-Peruvian folklore and modern orchestration to give audiences a new sound: one that is at once African, Andean and American.

08.04.15Annette's Education Campaign
One of my focus today is on my educational campaign. I had started to raise funds to support my teaching in The Bronx. I have prolonged this endeavor for quite some time.
I have reached out to organizations in the Bronx, however I was told I did not qualified since I reside in Manhattan even though the students that I teach live in the Bronx. I have learned that grants and funding options have guidelines that must be followed and unfortunately many of them are inhibiting me from doing the work I want to do.
The past several years I have been contemplating on how I can raise funds to continue my work which includes teaching privately and coaching groups ranging from a few to several students in and outside of the classroom. I've never waited for the funding since kids grow and move on and need the coaching now; Time does not wait for anyone (my third Cd is titled The Day Waits for Nobody). I've had many colleagues whom I respect suggest (and tell me) "It's time for you to get funding for what you do". My music education positions are positive ones however the salary that I make does not match the time, work, and funds that are needed to do this work.
Please join us in a campaign that takes us to the higher level of music for our youth.
I have been working"off the clock" for sometime now and it's time to go down a different path to continue the work.thank you

Read Stellar Review from:
Vicki Sola',
host/producer "Que Viva La Musica," 89.1 WFDU-FM,
and columnist, Latin Beat Magazine
Annette A. Aguilar is one of the most innovative, visionary bandleaders I've known. In this brilliant third production with her group Stringbeans--consisting of some of Latin music's and Jazz's most respected, virtuosic players--the renowned percussionist takes things to a whole new level, synthesizing Afro-Cuban /Latin Jazz and Brazilian music more dynamically than ever. Sultry, swinging, soulful and scintillating are adjectives that come to mind when describing this release, which defies categorization. And, as Aguilar says, "Just because it has a more harmonic structure, one that's real jazzy, doesn't mean you can't dance to it!"
